Fast Facts:
- Common Name:
Cardinal - Scientific Name:
Cardinalis cardinalis - Diet: Omnivore
- Size: 8-9 inches
- Weight: 1.5 to 1.8 ounces
Description:
Cardinals are hearty birds with tough bills. The male has a bright red colored plumage, while the female’s feathers are tan and/or gray.
Habitat and Migration
Moderately social birds, cardinals have been known to fly in flocks of other species. When mating season comes around, they pair off with their respective mates.
Social Behavior
Cardinals are monogamous during mating season and the males will provide food for and protect their partners while their egg clutches incubate. However, they will often find a new mate for the next mating season. When defending their territory, males often become aggressive. This behavior leads them into windows and other reflective surfaces, as they believe their own reflections are another bird.
