Habitat and Migration

Found in coniferous mixed forests in the northeastern and western United States and Canada, purple finches making their homes in the east usually head south for winter. Their western counterparts often move into lower elevations to prepare for colder weather.

Social Behavior

Purple finches are known to be loud and chatty. Females are typically the more dominant, often winning battles over food. When trying to win over females, male purple finches will show off their songs while “dancing” for females, typically holding sticks or pieces of grass in their beaks.
