Description:

Overall, song sparrows are a medium brown in color. They’re smaller, stout, sturdy birds with long, rounder tails. Younger song sparrows are more streaked with brown and gray coloring throughout. Adult song sparrows darken a bit, though their streaked coloring remains and varies depending on where the bird calls home.


Habitat and Migration

Song sparrows can be found in a variety of areas, including open spaces, along the edges of woodlands, among fields, and even right in your backyard. A small and isolated population of song sparrows live in Mexico, the majority calls the contiguous United States, through the southern half of Canada home.

Social Behavior

Song sparrows will toss weeds, grass, and other ground debris away with both feet while hopping forward while searching for food. The song of the males attracts potential mates, but is also a way for them to let other males to stay away.
