History of Des Moines Feed & Nature Center

Des Moines Feed Company

In 1944, John W. Holt purchased Des Moines Feed Company, which got its start in the heart of Des Moines selling grains, straw, coal, and more. Six years later, the business invested in a hammer mill and feed mixer, which allowed for the production of feed to take place on the premises. Over the next several decades, Des Moines Feed Company would expand lines of bird feed offered, as well as our connections to the community.

Nature Center

The Des Moines Feed & Nature Center resides right next door to Des Moines Feed Company. This is our retail business and it’s where you can find all kinds of bird feed, food plots for wildlife, animal bedding, turf and forage grass seed, nature grasses, wildflowers, and more! Our staff is trained and ready to answer questions you may have. Plus, we offer free delivery to our customers within 25 miles of our store.

Family Owned and Operated

Time may keep marching on, but our mission to provide non-GMO feed for birds, domestic animals, deer, and other wildlife has remained the same. In business for over 75 years, Des Moines Feed is still family owned and operated. When you stop by and see us at the Nature Center, you’re likely to visit with owner, Stan Holt. He has over 50 years of experience and he’ll even carry your bag of feed to your vehicle while you chat with him about all things feed-related!
